March 25th 2009 we are celebrated the 1st anniversary of our first ever meeting, in Lee Valley, Cheshunt, UK. to mark the occasion, we will share stories about what we were doing now, after GX has over.

now, i'm in Jakarta, working temporarily in the British Council office for about 3 months. i had mostly a great time here, especially because my desk is exactly in front of Ilsa's. so, everyday, all i've done so far is just confusing and disturbing her! fun, fun, fun!

Imel

I'm now studying for my BA Hons in Social Work at Bradford University just approaching the end of year 1 but I'm enjoying life. I am still educating people who like to waste electricity when they leave plug sockets on when not needed, I think the message is sinking in slowly for these people. I am also due to do some presentations about volunteering and also Global Xchange in June at a number of academies which should be interesting. I really miss Global Xchange and I think it has made me better for my future life :)

Wainey

i am uus, as you know, the cute girl from Malang.
i'm now still studying in the 8th semester of English Literature in Brawijaya university Malang.
with my friends, i am holding a Leadership Training for the students in my department. i am happy with my life and now trying hard to be rich! hahaha

next week will be holiday!!! yay!!!

Uus

I'm now counting to my last day at British Council while trying to make a perfect handover note for next Global XChange caretaker.

I decided to resign as, if everything goes well, I will start my master degree on Public Affairs this September 2009. I got a scholarship from a French company and will fly to Paris and stay there for two years...

I don't really like cold weather, but being able to see some of Team 70 during holiday would be great..

Take Care

Ilsa

<img style="float:left; Planting potatoes, which if it's grown properly, would be very usefull, especially for Street2Homes member. And cleaning up the wild grass, which he said, "actually, i have had a plan to do this since many years a go but never manage to do that. And today, you guys done it, it looks much nicer now and hopefully the potatoes will be usefull for Street2Homes. So thank you very much for what you have done, because i will never manage to do this by myself".

Actually, we're not the potato planting experts, so we've made more messes than the proper work. But hey! A process, even it's a bad one, is the part of a work, and the result wasn't too bad though. We've manage to plant about 20 potatoes, and we've cleaned up the 2 ft tall grass. And, the most important thing is, our will to help.

Tree Planting

You can call this team as te green team; we have a lot of discussion and very concern about environment, 1 volunteer have the environmental technique background, we have a green team t-shirt, and we've plant lots of trees.

Our first tree has planted during Stuart and Fauzan's GCD about Deforestation. We've plant the tree at the Meadows Children Centre and has named 'the Singing Bird tree' (for some random reason).

And then, we've also done the CAD about tree planting at Stuart and Judith's placement, Treehouse Children Centre, and have manage to plant about 15 trees. This CAD has included the children, so it was not just about the tree planting, but also about the green way of thinking regeneration.

Anti-Drugs Campaign

Angkots (public cars) and buses are the main transportation for people in Padang because it's affordable. So, they've become our main target for the anti-drugs stickers, so that the people who was in it could see. But, apart from them, we also handing the stikers and flowers to cars, motorbikes, and pedestrians. We also sticking the stickers on the fender's wagon, and wanting to make the shoppers in a department store to be aware about drugs by sticking at the store's wall, but has ended with the operational manager's expulsion to some of us because we've done that withiut permission, haha! Blame our angel side!

Clean-Up the Beach!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJg2iEVLagI/AAAAAAAAAS0/vIvFnySuDkM/s200/imel+foto2+023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230990926096853506" />Sophie and Karina's GCD become bigger with the action of more than 50 people doing the clean up of the beach, and had been reported by some newspapers and local TV, even the reportation was more about the government and the supporting organisations than Global Xchange, haha! But it really doesn't matter because that wasn't the main point. They can get the fame by claiming our idea, but we're the one who got the bless :).

The activity had started with very unimportant speeches from the other organisations representative, but the cleaning was very good and fun. The beach is one of the places where GX volunteers usually hang out beause it is so beautiful, and seeing the beach without the rubbish is mcuh much much better. But there was still 1 other problem. There's a bin crisis in Padang. We're very rarely to see a bin in any place. So, because we felt that there's no point if we've done the cleaning but there's no bin to put the rubbish so that the beach can stay clean, we will have another action about this. Just wait!

Say No To Plastic Bag campaign

It's a part of Imel and Angharad's GCD, considered to be a small CAD. We're done an action to went to the 3 big shops in Padang, where most of GX volunteers had a bad experiences being forced to take the plastic bag. We went to the shop, buy something with small package (so we have a reason to say no to plastic bag, ask to meet the manager or the person in charge, some made it some are not, to gives a GX petition to encourage the shop to change the bag policy, and then, we've handed out leaflets to the shopper.

the team calendar

Sunday/ March 23, 2008
-Indonesian volunteers fly to the UK
-Hendry's birthday
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday/March 24, 2008
-Indonesian volunteers arrive at the UK, stay at the Lee Valley Youth Hostel
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday/March 25, 2008
-UK volunteers arrive at the Hostel
-In Country Orientation begin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday/March 26, 2008 - Friday/March 28, 2008
-In Country Orientation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday/March 29, 2008
-In Country Orientation
-Leave for Bishop's Stortford & Different work counterpart pair each week have to prepare the material to teach the UK volunteers. It was still continued until now when we've already lived in Indonesia. But the lesson in Indonesia is more about revision and practical phrases.

African Dance and Drum

Sophie, Karina, Hannah and Nova's host parents are the owners and teachers of Efua Sey Cultural Academy. So, they gave us a special discount for a class to learned the dancing and drumming every thursday. Some of us even done the performance at some events, such as in the multicultural art day and the community farewell, and also got the certificate for that.

Self-Defense

Every monday, Hannah and Hendry's placement, YMCA, held a self-defense coaching for some staffs and GX volunteers. The coach, Francis, teach us how to face the unexpecting danger. It was very fun, and, because sometimes we're all very excited, it was hurts...

Joint GCD

All the Global Xchange team who’s doing the programme in March-September period has gathered in London, in the middle of each team’s phase transition. 7 exchange teams; Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Syria, Egypt, Philippine, and Indonesia has given a presentation each, and then divided into 7 big discussion groups. brainstorming with volunteers from other exchanges, meeting people from 7 different countries and had a big lunch together at the VSO office is a very good experiences.

THE COMMUNITY FAREWELL

UK phase

June 6, 2008-St. Mary Latton Church Hall, Harlow
Was very fun and sad in the same time. We have to had fun with people that very important in our last 3 months lives, for the last time. And also, it has happened in our last day in our placement, where we've had our placement's farewell earlier. God, gives us a break!

Same as the welcome, we've had speeches from GX, the host homes, and the volunteer placement's representatives. And we've had nasi goreng(fried rice, our food icon for the last 3 months) that we've cooked ourselves for dinner. And there's also the entertainments; GX team performs the African dance, sang So Long, Farewell and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, and the disco (but this time without the DJ).

Indonesia phase

September 6, 2008-Hotel Ambacang, Padang
Dinner tables, presentations, and speeches. this was the second sadiest day in GX team 70's history and those 3 things was definitely not the best memory to built in our mind.

Just remember about the on-the-spot fundraising and the money giving to Ibu Syamsi from Bundo Saiyo orphanage, and her inability to stop crying and smiling in the same time. It will makes us feel better, and that we're still having an impact for the community until the very end of the programme.

And, also, just remember, FRIENDSHIP IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN IMAGINATION AND KNOWLEDGE.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SNRgaCr2GPI/AAAAAAAAAU8/Yib4IVXF6cs/s400/bareng2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247925466307107058" />

the volunteer placements

Volunteers will also be pair up as a work counterpart pairs. each work counterpart pairs will be working together in a volunteer placements.

STANSTED PHASE

Lidya & Malcolm RAINER and MEADOWS CHILDREN'S CENTRE

RAINER
Shield House
Pinnacles
Harlow
CM19 5AR

Rainer is a national charity that offers under-supported young people a range of services designed to give them the emotional and practical support they need to lead secure and fulfilled lives.

MEADOWS CHILDREN'S CENTRE
Harberts Road
Harlow
CM19 4DL

Meadows Children's Centre offers support, play and learning opportunities for families with children under five. Based on a programme called Canada World Youth, it was adapted by VSO first as International Volunteer Exhange and then as World Youth. In 2004, VSO entered into partenrship with the British Council and Community Service Volunteers to the programme as Global Xchange. Over 6 months of the programme, 18 young people will gain new skills through volunteering and community development work in the UK and an exchange country.

This exchange is supported by the funding partner, BAA Communities Trust and V, the youth volunteering charity.

For more about the exchange partners visit: http://www.vso.org.uk/globalxchange/about/partnership.htm

For information about Global Xchange visit:
http://www.vso.org.uk/globalxchange/

Team 70 is the UK-Indonesia exchange. The team worked for 3 months already in the UK, volunteering at different placements in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire and Harlow, Essex, which both are parts of Stansted community. The Indonesian phase has started at June and took place in Padang, West Sumatera.

About Stansted

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWGo0nyLxI/AAAAAAAAAQA/7PswHqE2vT0/s400/stansted+airport.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230234578139098898" />BAA Stansted Airport, a major airport and the third-busiest in the UK, is just 2 miles from the border of Hertfordshire's Bishop's Stortford. So, places where we lived, Bishop's Stortford and Harlow, plus Puckeridge and Hoddesdon, has happened to be considered as Stansted community.

Bishop's Stortford is a market town in east Hertfordshire, on the county boundary with Essex. It is situated just west of the M11, is the closest town to London Stansted Airport, and is part of the London commuter belt. It is within the London Fringe. In the 2006 edition of the Channel 4 'Best and Worst Places to Live in the UK', East Hertfordshire was the seventh best district to live in. The town has a population of about 35,000 (United Kingdom Census 2001) and is administered by the East Hertfordshire district council.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWDHq21UKI/AAAAAAAAAOo/5Ht8rjCq7_s/s200/bishops.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230230710047297698" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWDulG_BqI/AAAAAAAAAOw/bYBSx34H0cc/s200/imel+foto2+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230231378519328418" />

Harlow is a new town and local government district in Essex. It is located in the west of the county and on the border with Hertfordshire, on the Stort Valley. The town is near the M11 motorway and forms part of the London communter belt. The district has a current population of 78,768 (2005 estimate).
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWB2MwEYyI/AAAAAAAAAOY/Z41miIEve6o/s200/harlow+station.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230229310396457762" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWCQa7sGwI/AAAAAAAAAOg/mfeQBZ40BAY/s200/water+garden.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230229760879893250" />

Puckeridge is a village in East Hertfordshire. The earliest settlers in the area were the Belgae, who arrived around 180 BC. A Roman town existed just to the north of the existing village and the village is at the cross roads of two major Roman roads, Ermine Street and Stane Street. The neighbouring villages of Standon and Braughing are recorded in the Domesday Book but Puckeridge is not although it was probably in existence. It survived the Black Death in the 14th century. A number of charities were established in Puckeridge in the 17th century, which gave grants of land that enabled the expansion of the village. The village developed and thrived because it was on the coaching route between London and Cambridge, Samuel Pepys records that he stopped at the Falcon (now the Crown and Falcon). Eventually the coming of the railway in the 19th century led to a decline in the fortune of the many Taverns and Inns in the village. The village is now a popular place to live close to good road networks leading into and around London. The village shares its name with HMS Puckeridge, a Hunt class destroyer, which was lost to enemy action during World War II.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWD_AyawQI/AAAAAAAAAO4/9nhhb_3aCfg/s200/puckeridge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230231660827164930" />

Hoddesdon is a town in the English county of Hertfordshire, situated in the Lea Valley. The town grew up as a coaching stop on the route between Cambridge and London. It is near Cheshunt, and a few miles from Bishop's Stortford. At its height during the Eighteenth century, more than 35 coaches a day would pass through the town. It saw a boom in the mid Twentieth century as gravel was extracted from the area to be exhausted by the 1970s. The lakes and water pits left behind have been used for local leisure amenities. Today Hoddesdon has a little light industry but is mainly a London commuter belt town. Hoddesdon hosted the eighth Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne in 1951. It is twinned with the Belgian city of Dinant. The town is served by Rye House railway station.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWEQaV5naI/AAAAAAAAAPA/5LJ0yCh9iug/s200/hoddesdon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230231959744650658" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWFDmdbqxI/AAAAAAAAAPY/3d-YXjmlH9Q/s400/hoddesdon+rye+station.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230232839170796306" />

About Padang

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWIdsMLx8I/AAAAAAAAAQI/l-JXSlqBGD4/s200/imel+foto2+022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230236585920546754" />Padang (means field) is the capital and largest city of West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located on the western coast of Sumatra at 0°57′0″S, 100°21′11″E. It has an area of 694.96 square kilometres (268.3 sq mi) and a population of over 750,000 people.

Padang is famous for a few things.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWI1x9OfZI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/boXU_Hbr0-U/s200/masakn+padang.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230236999785282962" />First, the cuisine. The cuisine of the Minangkabau people is commonly called Padang cuisine, due to it being the capital and largest city of the region. Padang restaurants are common throughout the country and are famous for their spicy food and their unique way of serving it. Padang food is usually cooked once per day, and all customers choose from those dishes, which are left out on display until no food is left. It is served in small portions of various dishes, but constituting, with rice, a complete meal. In a Padang-style restaurant, the table will quickly be set with dozens of small dishes filled with highly-flavored foods such as curried fish, fried tempeh, stewed greens, chili eggplant, curried beef liver, fried chicken, and of course, sambals, the spicy sauces ubiquitous at Indonesian tables. Customers take - and pay for - only what they want from this array of dishes. Food safety is generally a concern, as customers take food out of communal dishes with their hands, dishes which will be served to subsequent customers. The best known Padang dish is rendang, a spicy meat stew. Soto Padang (crispy beef in spicy soup) is local residents' breakfast favorite, meanwhile Sate (beef satay in curry sauce served with ketupat) is a treat in the evening.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWJWkxtvvI/AAAAAAAAAQY/zflzG0vqTSE/s200/mentawai.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230237563183021810" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWLA1nqOWI/AAAAAAAAAQw/sbvRl0EJvF4/s200/surf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230239388770384226" />Secondly, the tourism. Padang is a common transit point for surfers travelling to Batu Islands and Mentawai Islands, and for tourists visiting the West Sumatran highlands. Padang beach (known as Taplau or Tapi Lauik) which located from Samudra Street until Puruih, is well-known for its beautiful sunset and hundreds of food stalls. Bungus bay, to the south of Padang, is suitable for swimming and boating.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWJ5VzTdDI/AAAAAAAAAQg/u4yCnRyKW1Q/s200/angkot.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230238160458576946" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3Za8SVaPPmo/SJWKCXM_bUI/AAAAAAAAAQo/7WMZLiF-ILY/s200/bus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230238315453574466" />

Third, crazy angkots and buses! The full music and full colour & decoration public transportations.
